I have spent time each day since Friday calling my representatives. I started calling everyone—my two democratic Senators, my Republican Congressman, and my Republican Governor ask them to get oil television denouncing what is happening in Washington, D.C. and with Elon Musk effectively working through a coup on our government. Amodei’s office hung up on me twice.
This is all I’ve got, folks. This is the extent of my power right now, so I have to use it. I hope you consider doing the same thing. The one thing I’ve always heard about people in politics is that if you call, they will listen. Don’t email. emails can easily be ignored, but each time you call they have to spend time writing down what you say. It’s also harder and scarier, so fewer people do it. Art means something to them—I hope. I hope because I still haven’t seen a thing from any of them.
I also recognize that the power they wield is not great in this case, either. But here is my reasoning: people need to know about this, and they need to know it’s important. If my US Senator is getting in front of news cameras to talk about the illegal takeover of the government by an unelected, unconfirmed foreign national, the local news will cover it. You don’t need to go viral nationwide with the Perfect Speech. You need more people to know what’s happening and that you understand and are trying to stop it. The local news does that! And they can’t resist a Senator talking in front of cameras.
Maybe the governor, who seems to have an interest in making Nevada a decent place, can convince some other governors to say something to the guy they helped get elected about the damage these things will do to their states. I’m not holding my breath, but maybe. That’s why I call him. It’s also his job to rein in the lawlessness his own buddies are perpetrating. Be the Sheriff Governor!
But then there’s Amodei. Has he ever said anything? He’s a mining lobbyist who also works in Congress, so he’s a bit busy blowing executives from Newmont and Barrick and all the other foreign companies who strip Nevada clean of its precious metals. But maybe! Maybe he’s just a tiny bit nervous about making an appearance in a grocery store after he effectively worked to enable a fascist coup. I hope he is. Of course, speaking out to ensure democracy endures here in the United States could go a long way to making him more comfortable around the people he’d be empowering with that position. He’s dumb, though, so al I can do is hope.
I’ve stopped calling the Democrats. This isn’t their problem. It’s Republicans 100% and they need to get in front of this or answer to the people. It seems futile. Nothing matters. But I have to do at least this to make sure I don’t regret doing more. I’ll be out there when I can protesting, but for now, every day means a few p-hone calls to make sure they don’t forget we know what’s happening. Join me.
